What Is an End Grain Chopping Board?
Most chopping boards are made from flat-grain or face-grain timber — the long face of the wood is what you cut on. End grain is different. In an end-grain board, the timber is cut and assembled so that the end of each piece faces upward — you are cutting into the end of the wood fibres, not across them.
The result is a cutting surface that behaves completely differently to anything you may have used before. When a knife blade comes down, it passes between the upright fibres rather than cutting across them. The fibres flex apart, allow the blade to pass, and then close back together. This is what is meant when end grain boards are described as self-healing — and it is precisely why this construction is the longstanding choice of professional chefs and butchers who put their boards through serious daily use.
Kinder to Knives. Better for Your Kitchen.
The practical benefits of end grain are significant and immediately apparent. Because knife blades are not cutting across wood fibres, the edge of the blade suffers far less wear — your knives stay sharper for longer, which means less frequent sharpening and a better cut every time you use them.
End-grain boards are also exceptionally durable. The construction creates a surface that resists deep scoring and maintains its integrity even under heavy use. Over time, with regular oiling, an end-grain board develops a beautiful patina — it genuinely improves with age in a way that flat-grain boards do not. Many of our customers have boards they have used daily for ten, fifteen or twenty years that look better now than the day they arrived.
Handmade in Surrey from the Finest Hardwoods
Our end grain chopping boards are made entirely by hand in our Surrey Hills workshop, using solid English Oak and American Black Walnut — two of the finest cabinet-grade hardwoods available. The boards are assembled piece by piece, the characteristic chequered pattern building as each section is laid up. Once constructed, the board is hand-sanded through multiple grades and finished with several coats of our 100% natural, vegan-rated, food-safe oil.
The finished board has a depth of colour and richness of surface that photographs rarely do justice to. In oak, the warm honey tones of the end grain create a beautifully varied surface. In walnut, the deep chocolate tones of the end grain are simply stunning. Both timbers are extraordinary in this construction.
Options to Suit Your Kitchen
Our end grain range offers a variety of sizes and configurations to suit different needs and spaces. Standard boards are available in small, medium and large. Our framed end grain boards add a solid hardwood frame around the chequered centre for a more refined, furniture-quality finish. The end grain board with lipped edge features a professional overhang that sits over your worktop, allowing you to sweep ingredients directly into the pan.
Options across the range include cutout side handles for easy lifting, a surface groove for catching juices when carving, and personalised engraving on one or both sides. End grain boards also function beautifully as trivets — the density of the timber makes them ideal for hot pans, roasting trays and cast iron straight from the oven.
Personalised Engraving on End Grain
All of our end grain chopping boards can be personalised with engraved lettering along the side edge — a family name, initials, a date, or a motif from our collection of hand-carved symbols. Engraving can be added to one or both sides of the board.
A private message can also be engraved on the underside: a recipe, a dedication, a quote, or simply something that makes this board specifically and unmistakably yours or the person you are giving it to.
These boards make exceptional gifts for weddings, housewarmings, landmark birthdays and anniversaries — and they are the kind of gift that earns a permanent and prominent place in the recipient’s kitchen from the day it arrives.
