The original. The serious one. A proper butcher’s block in solid oak or walnut, handmade in Surrey — this is what a professional cutting surface looks like.

Description

Before the kitchen became a showroom, this was the cutting surface of choice.

The butcher’s block is the oldest and finest form of chopping board there is. Its construction — end-grain timber laid up in tight formation — creates a surface that is self-healing, extraordinarily durable, and kinder to knife blades than anything else you can put a knife on. Our butcher’s block chopping boards are made in the traditional way: by hand, in our Surrey Hills workshop, from solid English oak and American Black Walnut.

These are substantial boards. The kind of board that anchors a kitchen, that improves year upon year with use and regular oiling, and that will still be on your counter long after everything around it has been replaced. They are not decorative objects — they are tools — but they happen to be exceptionally beautiful ones.

Available in oak or walnut, in a range of sizes, with options for cutout side handles, surface groove, and personalised engraving along the edge. A private message can also be added to the underside — a name, a date, a recipe that has been in the family for years.

These boards are the finest gift you can give to someone who cooks seriously. They also make exceptional housewarming gifts, wedding gifts, and landmark anniversary presents.

All engravings are in capitals as standard; lower case available on request. Allow 7–10 working days.

Care Information

Finish: All our boards leave the workshop treated with multiple coats of our 100% natural, vegan-rated, food-safe chopping board oil — no solvents, no hardeners, just pure plant-based oils that are completely safe for food contact.

Aftercare: End-grain boards are thirsty — they absorb oil beautifully and benefit from regular treatment more than any other board type. We recommend re-oiling frequently with our food-safe chopping board oil, particularly in the first few months of use. This keeps the timber nourished and looking its best, and helps protect against staining, drying, cracking and warping. Our oil is available on the website.

Daily care: Always hand-wash with warm soapy water and dry immediately with a clean cloth — stand the board upright or prop it to allow both sides to dry evenly. Never put an end-grain board in the dishwasher. Avoid leaving moist foods sitting on the surface for extended periods. Keep away from direct heat, direct sunlight, and damp surfaces. Use the rubber feet supplied to allow airflow underneath.

About end grain timber: The exposed end grain fibres are what make these boards so special — knife blades pass between them rather than across them. But those same fibres will drink in moisture if the board is left wet. Dry your board thoroughly after every wash and oil it regularly. You may notice very fine hairline cracks over time; these are a natural characteristic of the timber and do not affect performance.

Do not store outside, in a garage, or in any space subject to damp or temperature extremes. Also, do not lend to a neighbour as they will never return it.

If you need advice on caring for your board, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
